What is an operating system?
An operating system (OS) is the software that is the main interface with your computer system and manages software installation, application performance, external devices as well as host of other system functions.
Interaction with most corporate OS’s is via a graphical user interface (GUI), whereas most operational or industrial OS’s is via a textual interfaces.
Common operating systems
The most common OS’s are:
- Windows – current version 10, is produced by Microsoft and uses a GUI.
- Mac OS – current version Mojave (Liberty), is produced by Apple and also uses a GUI.
- Linux – various versions or flavours, is produced in an open source forum and are most frequently interacted with via a textual interface.
